House Edge in Roulette: What Is House Advantage and How Does It Work?
Few things compare to the adrenaline-fueled feeling of placing your bets before the ball drops in online roulette. But this thrilling casino game, along with all other casino games, has a slight advantage in the casino’s favor, also known as the “House Advantage” or “House Edge”.
So, what is the house advantage when playing at an online casino? Do different house advantage roulette games have different odds? And how to calculate house edge when playing casino games? Find all the answers to your questions and a whole lot more in this roulette guide at Punt.
What does House Edge mean?
The House Advantage refers to the mathematical advantage that the casino has over the player in any casino game. And yes, almost every casino game offered by any online casino has a house edge – hence the term “the house always wins”, which is not entirely true, not by a long stretch.
However, you might find zero house edge roulette games online, but the chances are very slim. The best house advantage roulette games currently on our menu are European and French Roulette from RealTime Gaming. Both these games offer a house advantage of only 2.7%. Now you might think that is a lot, but when it comes to table games, it’s not that much at all.
Does this mean you’re always going to lose no matter what casino game you play? NO! It certainly does not. A mathematical house edge is calculated over a long period of time, and since nothing is certain and nobody knows what could happen, it’s only theoretical.
How to calculate house edge
To understand this formula and calculate house edge in roulette, let’s use a Straight Up bet in European and French Roulette as an example, as the house edge is the same for both. The European Roulette wheel has numbers 1-36, and including the 0, it makes 37 possible outcomes. The House Odds on a Straight Up bet pay 35 to 1 in European and French Roulette.
European and French Roulette house edge is calculated as follows:
House Advantage Percentage = (odds of losing – house odds) x (odds of winning x 100)
Odds of Losing – This is basically how many numbers you can lose on. If you place 1 bet Straight Up, that leaves 36 other numbers you can lose on. This means your Odds of Losing are 36/1 with a single Straight Up bet when calculating the roulette edge.
House Odds – This is how much the bet pays if you had to win. In European Roulette house edge games, it’s 35 to 1, which means we’ll use 35/1 for the calculation.
Probability of Success – This is how many numbers you can win on, divided by the total amount of numbers on the layout. Since you’re placing 1 Straight Up, your Probability of Success is 1/37.
Now all we need to do is insert these values in the roulette house edge calculator or formula, and it should look like this:
(36/1 – 35/1) x (1/37 x 100)
= (36 – 35) x (0.027 x 100)
= 1 x 2.7
House Advantage = 2.7 %
That means that the house advantage for both the European and French Roulette is 2.7%. This formula can be used to calculate the house edge in roulette for every bet. You can even calculate the roulette house edge red black bets and all the other outside bets too.
What about the American Roulette house edge?
The house advantage for American Roulette vs European and French Roulette is very different in comparison to the roulette house edge European and French roulette games offer. Why? Because American Roulette has 2 green zeros, with the second displayed as “00” on the wheel and the layout. This means that there are 38 possible outcomes, instead of 37.
How does the extra zero affect the American Roulette house edge? Let’s take a look using the same house edge roulette calculator formula as before:
House Advantage = (odds of losing – house odds) x (odds of winning x 100)
[37/1 (odds of losing) – 35/1 (house odds)] x [1/38 (odds of winning) x 100]
= (37 – 35) x (0.0263 x 100)
= 2 x 2.63
House Advantage = 5.26 %
That means the house edge for American Roulette is 5.26% – almost double the European and French Roulette house edge. But does this mean that American Roulette will see you losing more over the long run? Not necessarily. Roulette is a game of chance, and nothing is for certain. But if you want the best odds, choose European Roulette at Punt Casino.

Unfortunately, there is no sure way to beat the house or turn the house advantage in your favour when playing online roulette. If this was the case, everyone would be doing it, and ultimately, casinos wouldn’t exist. There are, however, many strategies you could use to improve your chances at winning in online roulette. Of course, placing one Straight Up is not the way to go, so find a strategy that works for you.
